A mid-winter Tankardstown House wedding
On a glorious mid-December day last year, Susan and James celebrated their marriage at the opulent Tankardstown House in Rathkenny, Slane, Co. Meath. Tankardstown House is a luxurious 18th Century manor house with a beautiful orangery and walled garden. It boasts beautiful grounds and a courtyard set in the heart of the Boyne valley.
Susan and James gave me complete freedom to document all the moments and emotion of the day. As a documentary wedding photographer, this freedom allows me to capture the real story of the day, honestly and unobtrusively.
The day kicked off at Susan’s house with beautiful winter light pouring in the windows. There was plenty of chat, excitement and bustle on their morning. Susan was super-chilled with makeup artist Anne Marie Doherty and Ceara from Creative Edge looking after Susan and her bridesmaids.

As guests arrived, the wonderful light continued to pour into the church as James awaited the arrival of his bride. Susan beamed as she walked down the aisle with her proud father. The church was fabulously decorated with floral displays by the talented Emer Mckenna.
Tankardstown House reception
For me, winter weddings can be so interesting to photograph. The light, or lack of it, can be challenging but the light can be so much more interesting than that of a mid-summers day. Tankardstown House offers lovely pockets of light from the large windows and internal lamps which photographically complements the story of the day.
Tropical storm, who always get the party going, took requests all afternoon and the rooms were filled with singing and impromptu dancing.
After some family formals, we popped outside for a few portraits with Susan and James. The couple were so relaxed in front of the camera and with their obvious connection, needed little direction.
After that it was back in for meal sit down and speeches.
Big thanks to Susan and James for choosing me to photograph their big day. All the best for the future! Gareth
